President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated the operation of Cirata floating solar power plant (PLTS) on 9 November 2023 in Purwakarta, West Java, as the largest in Southeast Asia and number three in the world. The operation of the floating PLTS is a collaboration between the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry, Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry, the state-owned electricity company PT PLN, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) company, Masdar. In terms of share ownership percentage, PLN owns 51% and Masdar 49%. The investment value reached 145 million US dollars or IDR 2.17 trillion.

The Cirata Floating PLTS, built-in 250 ha of the Cirata Reservoir, has a wind generator and smart grade for stable electricity production. With 13 blocks and 340,000 floating solar panels, it can generate 1,000 MWp of renewable energy, providing electricity to over 50,000 homes and reducing carbon emissions. PLTS Cirata also contributes to the addition of the new renewable energy (EBT) mix as a form of the country’s commitment and concern for the environment and sustainability.

Indonesia’s government aims for Net Zero Emission by 2060, in line with Presidential Regulation No. 112/2022. The move aims to attract green investment by accelerating renewable energy production and promoting the use of solar and wind-powered plants. President Joko Widodo believes Indonesia can harness the potential of renewable energy sources like solar and wind-powered plants and hopes that the Cirata floating PLTS will encourage other investors to invest in developing new and renewable energy infrastructure in Indonesia.
